Semantically related gestures facilitate language comprehension during simultaneous interpreting

چکیده

Abstract Manual co-speech gestures can facilitate language comprehension, but do they influence comprehension in simultaneous interpreters, and if so, is this modulated by interpreting (SI) and/or experience? In a picture-matching task, 24 professional interpreters translators were exposed to utterances accompanied semantically matching representational gestures, unrelated pragmatic or no while viewing passively (interpreters translators) during SI only). During passive viewing, both groups faster with related than gestures. SI, showed the same result. The results suggest that sensitive semantic relationship between speech gesture, facilitated when are linked. This sensitivity not experience. Thus, despite interpreters’ extreme use, multimodal processing facilitates way as all other processing.

Prediction During Natural Language Comprehension.

The notion of prediction is studied in cognitive neuroscience with increasing intensity. We investigated the neural basis of 2 distinct aspects of word prediction, derived from information theory, during story comprehension. We assessed the effect of entropy of next-word probability distributions as well as surprisal A computational model determined entropy and surprisal for each word in 3 lite...

Emotion simulation during language comprehension.

We report a novel finding on the relation of emotion and language. Covert manipulation of emotional facial posture interacts with sentence valence when measuring the amount of time to judge valence (Experiment 1) and sensibility (Experiment 2) of the sentence. In each case, an emotion-sentence compatibility effect is found: Judgment times are faster when facial posture and sentence valence matc...

Interpreting Hand-Over-Face Gestures

People often hold their hands near their faces as a gesture in natural conversation, which can interfere with affective inference from facial expressions. However, these gestures are valuable as an additional channel for multi-modal inference. We analyse hand-over-face gestures in a corpus of naturalistic labelled expressions and propose the use of those gestures as a novel affect cue for autom...

Beat gestures facilitate speech production

Does gesturing help speakers find the right words? According to several theories of speech-gesture relationships, iconic gestures should facilitate speech production, but beat gestures should not. Here we tested the effects of gesturing on word production in two experiments. Participants produced lowfrequency words from their definitions while instructed to perform beat gestures, iconic gesture...

Oscillatory neuronal dynamics during language comprehension.

Language comprehension involves two basic operations: the retrieval of lexical information (such as phonologic, syntactic, and semantic information) from long-term memory, and the unification of this information into a coherent representation of the overall utterance. Neuroimaging studies using hemodynamic measures such as PET and fMRI have provided detailed information on which areas of the br...
